Introduction

What follows is usually a collection of poetry that I have written since approximately the summer of 1997. I write when I am moved to write or when I am bored. Samuel Beckett, the 20th century Irish writer, once wrote “I write what I cannot say.” I understand that sentiment. I too write what I cannot say. I first wrote a poem in about 1976. It was a love poem, written at Birmingham University in miniscule handwriting because I did not want anyone else to read the poem.

The poetry which I have written that have been published on the Hearing Voices Network Cymru website varies considerably in terms of form and content. The themes of the poetry are varied. Some of the poems are reflective, nature-based, satirical, factual, story-like, spiritual, Christian, serious, philosophical , humorous, love-poetry, comic, mental – health based, and/or outrageous. The language of the poetry is English, Welsh, French or Spanish.

Dylan Thomas, the greatest Anglo-Welsh poet of the 20th century, wrote that he dedicated his “Collected Poems” to God. He added “and I’d be a damn fool if I didn’t”. I understand that sentiment. I dedicate these poems to God and I’d be a damn fool if I didn’t.

Influences on my poetry include The Bible, Brian Patten, Roger McGough, Harri Webb, Raymond Garlick, Emily Dickinson, Dylan Thomas, Waldo Williams, 20th century popular music, Voltaire and Samuel Beckett.

The poems are mad. “Madness is the birth-pains of a higher consciousness” (R.D.Laing)
